Environmental Management Systems ISO14001

Are you ready to go green?

ISO 14001 2004 is an environmental management standard. It specifies a set of requirements for Environmental Management Systems. The purpose of this standard is to help all types of organisations to protect the environment, to prevent pollution, and to improve their environmental performance.

An increasing number of companies are seeking to trade only with organizations that have an Environmental Management System that meets this standard. C&G Safety & Environmental Limited can help you achieve this standard. We'll discuss your requirements with you and suggest the solution that best suits your needs. After assessing your needs we will give you a fixed-price quotation so that you know exactly how much your consultancy for registration will cost. Your quotation will be based on your company profile and an assessment of your needs.

Let us help you to implement your organisation's Environmental Management System - you'll be making a powerful statement about your organisation's environmental credentials.

Other benefits of ISO 14001 certification include:

  • Better management of environmental risks, now and in the future
  • Increased access to new customers and business partners
  • Demonstration of legal and regulatory compliance
  • Potential for reduced public liability insurance costs
  • Overall cost savings: in terms of consumption, waste and recycling

In addition, ISO 14001 is designed to be compatible with other management system standards such as ISO 9001 (Quality), OHSAS 18001 (Health and Safety) and ISO 27001 (Information Security).

COSHH Risk Assessment

Our safety consultants carry out a wide range of COSHH risk assessment work for companies both large and small.  Whether you are a small business who wishes to have a short, company specific course of training or if you are a large client with a list of dangerous substances in use we can help.

Typical services include but are not limited to;

  • Working one on one with health and safety managers and assistants to build knowledge
  • Creating revised COSHH Risk Assessment manuals and other documents
  • Carrying out exposure monitoring for Hazardous Substances
  • Working with the client to find new and less hazardous alternatives
  • Interpreting Hazard Data Sheets from the USA and other suppliers
  • Reviewing Hazard Data Sheets to identify hazardous components and establishing a measure of relative risk

We have vast experience in this field and look forward to speaking with you abut any specific need, check the next page for a list of substances which we regularly sample for.

Indoor Air Quality and SBS

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a term referring to the air quality within and around buildings and structures, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants.

IAQ can be affected by microbial contaminants (mold, bacteria), gases (including carbon monoxide, radon, volatile organic compounds), particulates, or any mass or energy stressor that can induce adverse health conditions. Indoor air is becoming an increasingly more concerning health hazard than outdoor air.

Completion of indoor air quality surveys involve the collection of air samples and monitoring human exposure to pollutants.  Our expert safety consultants are able to visit your premises to make these measurements either directly on the day of the sampling or through the use of datalogging instruments we can gather information over a longer period.  Typical monitoring can include CO (carbon monoxide), CO2 (carbon dioxide), relative humidity (RH%) and temperature.  Carbon dioxide levels are a key indicator of stale air as we breathe out high concentrations allowing levels to build in areas with poor air changeover rates.

We are skilled in monitoring almost any airborne contaminant (see the industrial section for details of monitoring for wood dusts, welding fumes and similar).  We will issue a full report and exploration of the issues involved plus give solid advice on how to address and ameliorate the issues and have worked in the past with partners in HVAC to address and solve the problems.  If you would like to know more or talk through your concerns with an expert consultant please call us on 01453 800100.

COSHH Exposure Monitoring

Our safety consultants have carried out a huge number of COSHH monitoring exercises for our clients.  From a high-tech electronics company to a sawmill, we've been there and done it.  Listed below are some of the more popular sampling programmes we complete ordered by industry type;

  • Welding fume exposure (consumables for mild, stainless steel, galvanised metals, alloys, etc);
  • Solder fume exposure (rosin, fluxes);
  • Wood dusts (soft woods and hard woods);
  • Silica (respirable crystalline silica);
  • Solvent exposure (xylene, toluene and many others);
  • Isocyanate exposure (MDI, TDI, etc);
  • Kerosene exposure (automotive tests, fuel injector systems);
  • Potting compounds using in manufacture;
  • Solvent based paints;
  • IAQ - Indoor Air Quality (PM2.5, PM10 particulate testing; Temperature, CO, CO2, relative humidity and barometric measurements and data logging). Often linked to SBS (sick building syndrome);
  • Isocyanurates from powder paints and similar substances;
  • Lead exposure (working with lead, lead solder and welding);
  • Silver solder (cadmium and non cadmium);
  • Styrene exposure (boat and mould manufacture using resins and fibreglass);
  • Tributyl phosphates and triphenyl phosphates (often used as anti-foaming agents in light hydraulic oils used in military aerospace and large jets such as the A380).

Remember, these are just some of the substances which we sample for and specific clients in industries such as aerospace have their own individual needs which we are able to cater for - if a substance isn't listed our safety consultants can still help.

Noise Assessment

Our safety consultants have carried out hundreds of noise risk assessments and can perform both standard and octave band measurement surveys.  You will receive a comprehensive report detailing exact noise exposures and telling you just what you need to do to manage the risks.  We produce a noise risk assessment as part of each report and can help you to inform your staff of what needs to be done.

We also;

  • Help you select appropriate hearing protection for your type of noise exposure and environment
  • Run 'toolbox talks' for your staff to impress on them the need for hearing protection and to give them a chance to ask questions
  • Work with you to address the root cause of high noise levels, to reduce the need for hearing protection where possible
  • Work with you to look at changes in the process which could reduce noise emission
  • Work with you to look at options for noise absorbing materials
As noise safety consultants we have a wealth of experience in this area.  Please call us to find out more.

Workplace Risk Assessments

Whatever your type of workplace, an independent and expert audit of your current arrangements is a good idea.  Our safety consultants visit thousands of workplaces of all types and during each visit we collect the very best practice and use this to give you advice and guidance on measure which will ensure you have the best of safety procedures.

Our reports are comprehensive and easy to understand and we will review every aspect of the workplace from first aid through to health surveillance.  The report give significant detail but also a quick summary page allowing busy managers to see the important issues at a glance.

Typical issues covered during a workplace audit would be;

  • Policy and arrangements
  • Health surveillance and COSHH record keeping
  • First aid and welfare arrangements
  • Consultation with employees on safety issues
  • Fire Risk Assessment and arson
  • Manual handling and ergonomics
  • Display Screen Equipment
  • Personal protective equipment selection and use
  • Work equipment provision and use
  • Workplace transport safety
  • Lifting equipment and accessories including passenger lifts
  • Pressure equipment
  • Slips, trips and falls
  • Electrical systems safety and inspection
  • Safety signs
  • Storage of hazardous materials and gases
  • Storage of highly flammable substances
  • Information, instruction and training including refresher and induction training
  • Accident reporting, recording and investigation
If you have a specific need please contact us.  We travel the length and breadth of the UK providing these services to every type of business

Display screen equipment assessments

We can provide a fully electronic service which delivers a questionnaire directly to your users wherever they happen to be.  Our system will analyse this data, chase only those users who have not completed their questionnaires and provide a full breakdown of the answers given exportable to CSV and Excel.

By outsourcing your requirement to us you can concentrate on the issues at hand, while we do the repetitive but worthwhile task of accessing all of your DSE users.

We can also train your staff to react to issues raised within the questionnaires, or visit your locations to review the findings from an ergonomics perspective.  Whether you have five or 5000 staff, our safety consultants have the skills, processes and experience to cope.

Legionella Risk Assessment

Legionella is a naturally occurring bacteria found in many natural water courses; rivers, lakes and resevoirs.  The bacteria only becomes a problem when it experiences the right conditions for rapid growth and this means an increase in temperature which is common within the workplace.

For examples;

  • Water systems incorporating a cooling tower.
  • Water systems incorporating an evaporative condenser.
  • Hot and cold water systems.
  • Other plant systems containing water which is likely to exceed 20°C and which may release a spray or aerosol during operation or when being maintained. This also includes showers / taps etc.

Under health and safety law, you must assess the risks from legionella bacteria that may affect your staff / residents or members of the public and take suitable precautions to reduce all risks to a minimum  this process is known  as legionella risk assessment.

As an employer or a person in control of the premises (e.g. a landlord), you must:

  • Identify and assess sources of legionella bacteria risk.
  • Prepare a scheme, (or course of action), for preventing or controlling the risk of legionella within your premises.
  • Implement and manage the legionella control scheme.
  • Appoint a person to be responsible for your legionella testing, design and management of your action or management plan.
  • Keep records and check that precautionary systems are effective, (continued legionella monitoring).
  • If appropriate, notify the local authority that you have a cooling tower(s) on site.
If you would like to discuss legionella risk assessment, legionella risk management plans or legioenlla risk training please contact us today on 01453 800100 to speak to one of our experienced safety consultants.
