Writing a Health and Safety Method Statement (CDM Regulations)
Method statements (sometimes also known as a safety system of work) are typically required under projects which come under the CDM Regulations and are under the control of a CDM Coordinator. Typically, a larger contractor (perhaps the Principal Contractor under the CDM Regulations) will ask a smaller contractor to submit method statements and risk assessments to cover the tasks which are to be completed on the project. Not all tasks may need to be covered by the method statement but higher risk activities should always be included and are most likely to be requested.
In our experience the easient approach for our clients is for us to produce a range of generic method statements and risk assessments which cover common work activities. for example, operation of various items of plant, tools and equipment, work sequences such as erection of steel frames or roofing can be broken down into the tools being used and the component parts of the process. In general the key is to be logical. Consider the key sequences of work and break this into distinct sections. Marking out, digging excavations using plant, filling with concrete, and so on.
One of the advantages of using our support services is that you are almost ready to finish before you begin. Your retained safety consultant will have completed your common work risk assessments and method statements as part of your safety policy document. Your task will then be to select the items which match the work you will be completing at site and fill in our concise two page form which handles site specific risk and makes your method statements and risk assessments into a workable safety plan complete with a sign off sheet for your staff, key staff contact details, first aid assessment, COSHH information, environmental controls and so on.
