Car and trailer licensing - can your staff tow a trailer?
You might be surprised to learn that there is a difference between licenses held before January 1, 1997 and those issued after this date. If you had your license issued before this date you will keep you entitlement to drive a vehicle / trailer combination with a combined weight of 8.25 tonnes (gross vehicle weight). However, if your license is issued on or after this date you do not have the same entitlement.
Whats the difference?
Newer drivers can still drive a vehicle which weighs up to 3.5 tonnes but the trailer must be a maximum of just 750 kg. If you need a member of staff to tow a heavier trailer than this then they will need to pass a test known as category B+E.
What next?
Check the licenses of staff to make sure they have the appropriate entitlement and don’t rely just on age – some older drivers may have retaken their test or just qualified later than you might thnk. We offer courses for people requiring the category whether you’re towing a horse box, fuel bowser, caravan or trailer. Just call us on 01453 800100 to find out more.
